Stress fracture...

Yes, the race is upon us! Super excited to see all of you! I do have some bad news though- I have a stress fracture in my right foot :(

My foot has been bothering me for a long while now and I finally went and got it checked out. The doc did an xray but normally stress fractures don't show up on xrays... They wanted me to do an MRI to truly diagnose the fracture but I didn't want to pay for that, so I didn't actually get the MRI done. I asked what they would do for me if it was a stress fracture- they said to just stop the repetitive motion of running for 6 weeks and then slowly start with the activity again. I can handle that without having to pay money for an MRI.

I was so angry/sad about this though. I told myself that I was going to run anyway... My husband doesn't agree with me because he has to be the one to listen to me complain so much about the pain in my foot. Right now, I don't know if I will run the full 1/2 marathon or maybe I will just switch to the 5 k.... I still want to race after working and training for so long... But I haven't ran for like a week and a half now. I might try a short run tomorrow and see how it goes.

Just thought I would let you all know that I may or may not be participating :( But I will definitely be there to cheer you all on if I can't run!

Also- I forgot to mention my nice surprise- AMY IS COMING!!!!!!!!!! Yep, my amazing cousin, Amy, is going to be flying in on Thursday to cheer us all on! She is so much fun for the people who don't really know her- you will love her!

Lame-o

I've procrastinated so far… I'll figure it out tonight.

Staying arrangements

Good job Mannie and Carl! Matt and I will stay with you guys for that one night.... We will share the cost. Please let me know if someone else already asked to take you up on the offer. After that race, if we decide to go camping or whatever - Matt and I have a nice tent. Or if you guys want, you can stay at our apartment and we could try to rent the "guest apartment" for $40 if some of you guys want to stay there for the night.

Please let me know so I can make arrangements if need be. Camping or just staying in Rapid?!?!?!

Hotel

So, if Carl and I book a hotel room, does anyone want to share it with us? We were thinking about the Quality Inn in Spearfish and the rates for two queen beds compared to one king is the same, so we could reserve the room with two and fit a few more people in there with us. Would help with the cost too, looks like $122 a night. Let me know what you guys think!

Hotel

I vote hotel. I think Carl and I will look at them and get something reserved this weekend. Not sure where.

Decisions...

I agree with Mel, we need to figure things out! I thought we should probably get some hotel rooms for Friday night and then maybe camp saturday? I really would like to sleep in a bed before the run... just saying. What do you all think?!?!?

Vacation days?

Hey all -
When are we traveling out to the Hills? Should us worker folks plan to take Friday off or Thursday+ as well? Any thoughts?

Any other thoughts on hotels, camping etc? We should decide soon!

Happy National Running Day!

Twitter is important because it tells me about important things I would never know otherwise. Including National Running Day!

And apparently there are 10 ways to celebrate. I thought there would be just one--you know--running. But 10!

10 Ways to Celebrate National Running Day - June 1, 2011

If you're on Twitter, you should probably follow these folks. And if you're not on Twitter, you should probably get on. Like now.

Glitch in my left Nit-ch.

Okay the title is kind of far out there… I don't care!

I'm still chugging along with running/power walking at my noon hour and do some weight lifting in the evening.  Basically turning into a stud (notice the non-modesty in this post C:)  The person that is motivating me the most in Brookings right now is Tim, the SDSU equipment manager.  He walks like a mad-man at a crazy incline for an hour.  So along with Grey's Anatomy and Tim, so I'm getting my miles in… even if it is getting to be a lot of walking with an occasional mile run.

On a side note: I went to see the athletic trainers yesterday.  My knee has swollen and is continually stiff from the moment I wake up to bed.  The result - tendinitis!  I'm doing some strengthening exercises for my hips and legs/knees.  I also I get to take ibuprofen tablets… a dozen a day!

I'll see how it goes.  But not going to lie… the runs are not that enjoyable right now.  Praying for a newborn knee.

I vote camping

Arrangements for the actual weekend?!?!?

So I was just thinking about our plans for the actual weekend of this run.... Where are we planning on staying?! I think we should look into getting hotel rooms or a cabin or something. The run is pretty early in the AM and I don't think we will all want to drive from Rapid. Just assuming... I can make the reservations if people will tell me their ideas. Help me out here crew! We need to make some arrangements soon if we are going to stay in or around Spearfish. I hope everyone is keeping on track with their running... I know I have slacked off lately but I am back at it again! Love ya guys! Keep on trucking!

5K Update

Whoa! I've been bragging that I finished my 5K in 28 minutes, but luckily my estimate wasn't too far off. (Gee, maybe they could have gotten the results up earlier!)

I ran my first 5K in 0:30:00 and finished in 50th place (out of 113). Not half bad, right?

*Smiley face*

I hope you are all doing well. Miss you!

5K on Friday!

Here's to hoping for good weather on Friday night! I'm running the Brookings 5K, which starts at 6:00 p.m. (Anyone interested in dinner afterwards?)

This week, I've been running randomly around my neighborhood. And without glasses, which is always interesting! I think I better put in my old contacts for the races :)

2.6 miles on Sunday and 2.65 miles on Tuesday. Hoping for a 3.1 miler tonight after work, then resting Thursday.

Catch ya later!
Mel

Fact!

Here is a fun / gross fact:
I work grounds crew and get pretty dirty during the day.  I also get an hour lunch.  So I decided I would run during my lunch hour to either complete my workout for the day or cut my later workout in half.

Today I did hills for 30 minutes.  A bonus about working out over the noon hour is that I cannot stop running because I want to finish the timed workout.

Break time

So I will admit that I have not ran for over a week now... I have been a pretty sick girl. I work the next two night shifts and then I plan on hitting it hard on my days off. Being still sick has held me back, but I plan on getting back on the running soon. My poor chest still can't handle it. I am dreading my first run back because I know it will be so hard.... Keep on trucking right!?

Mel was here for a visit Thursday night and Friday. We had a great time :) We were discussing plans for where we should stay the night before and after the run.... Any suggestions? Do you guys want to just stay in Spearfish those nights?

Country Running

This past week has been finals at SDSU.  Although I was not hammered with finals, I did get hammered with a thesis proposal and numerous softball games I announced.  Miles were few and far between.

I finally worked up enough nerves to talk with Rod, the SDSU CC coach, about his suggestions on shoes.  Going to Dunhams just doesn't cut it for me.  Rod thought I may be overpronating when I run and suggested the Nike Structure Triax.  I was slightly disappointed because I like the Nike Frees.  Oh well.  Later that day I ordered the Structure from athletics.  Sweet deal and hopefully sweet product.

Today, however, I decided to end my semester with a nice long run in the country side.  I mapped it out and decided to do an endurance/check run.  I wasn't sure it was going to go well because I have had issues with my knee and only ran once earlier this week… I need new shoes like I said.  But the 10.5 miles went well.  I only stopped twice to stretch me knee and took it pretty easy.  I realize I need to push myself harder, but that will come once I feel okay with my knee.

Keep up the good work everyone and good luck Foseroo with your 5K in a week :)

Don't Stop

OK, for those who monitor the miles on the side have probably noticed my extreme lack of activity for approximately a month. Well I hurt my knee and fell of the horse for a little while. I am getting back up, especially after noticing how much fitness I lost when I ran the Arbor Day 5K, I ran it and felt like I was going to die afterwards, those who saw me afterwards can probably attest to my lack of conversation, sorry...this was because all I could think about was my pounding head and twisted stomach.

So now I am in Canada and doing everything in kilometers, 6K for me today, and I feel like I am starting all over from scratch. So take this advice from a hypocrite.... don't stop... it doesn't take long before you have no ambition to get back after it. Thank goodness my hotel has a pretty stellar workout room.

This is kind of a negative post... nobody likes a Negative Nancy... RUNNING IS THE MOST FUN EVER AND WE ALL ROCK AT IT... 1/2 MARATHON HERE WE COME!!

Loved the Sunny Weekend!

Finally, the sunny weather helped motivate me to get out the door more consistently! I ran in the mornings on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, I headed over to the SDSU track meet in Brookings and ran with the girls on their warm-ups and cool-downs. It felt so great to be consistent again! Thus, I'll probably be out in the rain today :p

Sunday morning was the best run by far (well, other than seeing my old teammates on Monday). I woke up to a cold temperature, but the sun was just rising and there wasn't any wind... what a glorious way to start your Easter Sunday! As I turned off my drive-way, I heard the church bells of Sinai ring in the distance (one whole mile, haha)... the bells were for the Sunrise Service. I continued going south and east and turned around, and as I neared my drive-way again, I heard the bells for the end of the service. The Luther League puts on the Sunrise Service, so it was shorter than usual (about 30 minutes). I got home just in time to jump in the shower and get ready for the 9:00 service. He Is Risen!!!

Update...

So it has been a long time since I blogged... sorry!!! Here is an update on my running--> I have been a rockstar! LOL. I can now run for an hour straight :) Realizing that I have to run another hour straight on top of it is kind of frustrating but I will get there! Today I am gonna shoot for running 7 miles! I hope I can rock it! I'm proud of everyone for continuing on this journey!

And yes, I have bought myself gifts for achieving those extra miles. I bought some new running socks and some new sports bras :) Love it, love it!

Happy Easter everyone! Get out and show the Easter bunny what's up!

Ice Breaker

I ran the five mile race for the Great Falls Icebreaker. I ran it in 38 something. under my 40 min goal. I then tried to find my friend who planned on walking much of the three mile. I didn't find her so I ran the whole thing with a co-worker. Ran this three miles in 27 something. 8 miles, I haven't ran since and have the flu today. Not Fun.

Arbor Day!

So, I was a real bum and took the whole last week off. It felt great. It also feels great to get going back on the treadmill and getting some miles under me. Arbor Day 5K - April 29th - 6:30 AM - Brookings - free to enter and every runner gets a free tree!

RC 2.5

Greetings from Rapid City!

I'm here for work and decided to take advantage of the fitness room this morning. I ran 2.5 miles and was a hot sweaty mess. And then I ate 3 continental breakfasts.

It was glorious.

Miss you all!
(Also, fabulous to see Matt & Alaina for a little bit last night!)

Redbox

There are Redboxes everywhere...but have you ever walked to your nearest Redbox?

Tonight I did! And it was splendid. Luckily, it's only 3 miles round trip.

Happy Tuesday!

Busy is just an excuse.

Hola!

Apologies for the lack of blogging.  My schedule has been crazy, but I have been keeping up with miles :)

This past week I have been without a computer, which was horrible.  I took it in for a minor repair and they kept it all week.  So I have been in the office at the HPER typing away each night.  As I was typing one night I realized how much I needed to get up and move around... SO.... I decided after I finished a section I would run a mile on the track.  One night I did 7.5 miles.  Yes, it is a bit crazy, but you have to do what you have to do!

I am really thankful for Evan running with me.  I have been a grump when getting out there.  Now I see where I need improvements... my attitude :)  Thanks for putting up with me on the long runs!  Also I have started to challenge myself.  I set a time, set a distance, and GO.  It hasn't been a tremendous push, but I still feel it.

Onto the next subject... I think I need new shoes.  Looking at my miles for a month of running and than multiplying it by 10... uffda, I am in need of shoes.  The soles don't look bad, but I want to prevent any injuries.  Maybe I'm too cautious... anyways, I am looking at minimalist shoes.  Runningonthewhiteline.com has an article on what shoes to get.  During sophomore year I bought a pair and they were simply amazing.  I remember how hard it was for my feet to adjust, but once they did I vowed never to turn back.. unfortunately I could never find another pair I liked and settled for the typical running shoes.  Nike is the brand I probably will switch back to.... now to budget them in :)

Great job everyone!!! I'm proud of each of you and continue telling everyone about how awesome my friends are and their willingness to endure five months of craziness.  Love ya all!!

Remember, if you think you are too busy... it is just an excuse :)

FRIDAY!

This week has been crazy.

Dan flew out on Sunday night. I had quiz bowls in Beresford and Dell Rapids on Monday and Thursday and I helped at our home track meet on Tuesday. Wednesday, I finished grading some tests and I organized for the quiz bowl that we host next Monday - this has been difficult to plan as I'm still looking for one more timer/scorekeeper and trying to get a screen and a projector!!! This weekend doesn't slow down any as I have to go home tonight as tomorrow is my first bridal shower!

Anyways, that had nothing much to do with my running except that I've barely had a second to breathe let alone run!

Dan and I went up to Mt. Carmel this weekend for an engaged couples retreat... we went for a 4.5 mile run on Saturday morning (none of the other couples wanted to join us!). I blame the hills and my lack of training lately, as Daniel definitely pushed me. It's nice having someone to run with :)

No more excuses...

I am a big excuse maker I have learned.... I use my strange work schedule as an excuse to why I am putting in less miles than most of you. I flip flop from 12 hour day shifts to 12 hour night shifts... Yes, I know I only work 3 shifts a week, but those shifts are usually longer than just 12 hours. After I work 12 hours at my job, I just don't have the energy to go and run or do anything for that matter. I really need to work on this though, even if it just a couple of miles after a shift! Hopefully this will get easier now that the weather is getting nicer out. PS- It was so nice to see some of you guys when I was in Sioux Falls! Thanks so much for coming down! It meant the world to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fun Fact

By looking at this blog I realize I really don't have much of a life... uffda.

Good job everyone and keep it up!

Slowly, but surely

Let's get the elephant out of the blog. I am not running nearly as much as anyone else. However, I am set to change that. So far, I have been successful in running two days in a row. Not far, but I'll get there :)

I'm also exploring different parts of my neighborhood, which is exciting! And, fun fact, I understand why I get invites to sign up my kindergartners for Harrisburg. Probably because the school is 100 feet from my apartment. Genius. Now I need to find some kindergartners.

Other than that, life is good. Sad that I missed Alaina's trip to Sioux Falls, but glad I got to hang out with my family. Cheerio, darlings!

March Madness!

Hard to believe it's almost been a month since we all really started training. I just got done running 5 miles straight and it felt really good, I felt really strong about it. I love watching the NCAA women's tournament while I run, there's been some good games and it keeps my mind off of wanting to quit. :)

I am a whiner.

I realized I whine a lot when I run.  I make up excuses why I have to stop or slow down.  Poop needs to be grouped, and I need to keep my yap shut because it doesn't pass time any faster whining.  Many thanks to Evan for running 9.1 miles today with me outside.  I have not doubt he is going to rock this race!

Here is a blog I found about running.  I didn't want to run today, but I read this today and thought.. pssh I could run farther than Nick today who sat in his chair.  And I was off… enjoy the list!  I think it was funny and so true C:

Keep that quarter in your pocket.  Sometimes I wish I did have one too!

The 40 Runner’s Commandments
by Joe Kelly
1. Don’t be a whiner. Nobody likes a whiner, not even other whiners.
2. Walking out the door is often the toughest part of a run.
3. Don’t make running your life. Make it part of your life.
4. Keep promises, especially ones made to yourself.
5. The faster you are the less you should talk about your times.
6. Keep a quarter in your pocket. One day you’ll need to call for a ride.
7. Don’t compare yourself to other runners.
8. All runners are equal, some are just faster than others.
9. Keep in mind that the later in the day it gets, the more likely it is that you won’t run.
10. For a change of pace, get driven out and then run back.
11. If it was easy, everybody would be a runner.
12. When standing in starting lines, remind yourself how fortunate you are to be there.
13. Getting out of shape is much easier than getting into shape.
14. A bad day of running still beats a good day at work.
15. Don’t talk about your running injuries. People don’t want to hear about your sore knee or black toe.
16. Don’t always run alone.
17. Don’t always run with people.
18. Approach running as if the quality of your life depended on it.
19. No matter how slow, your run is still faster than someone sitting on a couch.
20. Keep in mind that the harder you run during training, the luckier you’ll get during racing.
21. Races aren’t just for those who can run fast.
22. There are no shortcuts to running excellence.
23. The best runs sometimes come on days when you didn’t feel like running.
24. There is nothing boring about running. There are, however, boring people who run.
25. Distance running is like cod liver oil. At first it makes you feel awful, then it makes you feel better.
26. Never throw away the instructions to your running watch.
27. Don’t try to outrun dogs.
28. Don’t wait for perfect weather. If you do, you won’t run very often.
29. When tempted to stop being a runner, make a list of the reasons you started.
30. Without goals, training has no purpose.
31. Go for broke, but be prepared to be broken.
32. Spend more time running on the roads than sitting on the couch.
33. Make progress in your training, but progress at your own rate.
34. “Winning” means different things to different people.
35. Unless you make your living as a runner, don’t take running too seriously.
36. Never tell a runner that he or she doesn’t look good in tights.
37. Never confuse the Ben-Gay tube with the toothpaste tube.
38. Preventing running injuries is easier than curing them.
39. Running is simple. Don’t make it complicated.
40. Running is always enjoyable. Sometimes, though, the joy doesn’t come until the end of the run.

Scapegoat Workout

I didn't run today. I got outside snowshoeing instead. 6.5 miles of mountains. Love it. I'm still counting the distance bc elevations clunky shoes and snow really wear a guy out. Even if I did takes breaks to build snowmen.

This Week...

... will be a low mileage one. I had quiz bowl last night and I'm judging a middle school oral interp contest on Thursday. Tonight, I have my future sister's birthday supper and tomorrow is church night. I know I can fit small runs here and there, but it won't be anything like last week! Low weeks can be good for you though - allows your body to recoup a little and do a little self-healing!

Zumba+Me = Awkward.

This past weekend I wanted to rest my body.  So I did a P90X Kenpo on Saturday and Zumba cardio on Sunday.  This was my first time doing the Zumba cardio… interesting.  Basically if you can twist your hips and clap your hands than you win.  I felt weird, and when my family saw me they thought I was awkward!

Today I did 4 miles.  The first two I pushed with speed intervals.  Basically loved it because the miles went by faster :)  The last two I just was bored so jogged.  I am focusing on my core this week with less miles… I'm not sure why I am not putting more miles in… just feeling different :)

Best wishes friends!

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Greetings all, I'm officially in training now. I just flew back into Great Falls last night. I've had a busy schedule in Texas for my training. I was able to put in 12 miles during the trip. Unfortunately eating out every night because I didn't have a kitchen kinda sucked and didn't add to my ambition to be healthy. I'm going to do 4 miles this afternoon on the river down to the springs (shown in pic). Glad to see everyones numbers are growing. I'll do my best to catch up. Thanks for inviting me to be in this. Miss you all! Cheers!

Snap

I'm not sure why that post was at 6:30 AM because I definitely was not awake at that time. I haven't done my morning workouts like I thought I would, I'm too lazy for that at this point. So, Em, I'm thinking the posting time is off somehow or someway!

Water Aerobics

Wow-sers people you keep impressing me!  I can honestly say knowing I have to write down a mile makes me want to keep running each day and not take a day off.  I will when my body tells me to, but right now I'm just rocking it!

Lately I have been craving the pool workouts, yet still want to keep running.  So I compromise.  Today I did six miles on the treadmill at mediocre pace, 4 miles on the wave (20 minutes), and water aerobics.  I only did the water because I thought it would be a nice cool down… plus I miss old people.  It was a good switch in my routine.

I did notice I got two blisters on my feet.  I have gotten blisters in these spots in the past and know it will only take some time for my feet to start getting 'tough'… attractive :)  Basically it comes down to me getting new socks… today I HAD TO WEAR MY SHAMROCK SOCKS!!

Ps. Mannie - you must never sleep because you are posting at 6:30am…my dear, that is before the sunshines!!

Ps. Evan - you may lose some toenails :) For a while I had permanent black and blue toes.  Sometimes it comes down to the sizing of the shoe.

Energizer Bunny

So I realized today, after starting my run that I really enjoy running (or atleast the newness of it), especially outside with nice weather. I have been out of town for work since Sunday morning and never really had a chance to get a good run in, so today I went for it. I backed off my usual pace, but felt like the energizer bunny. 10 miles today nonstop, only stopping to wait for 3 stoplights. I have this unusual feeling in my legs right now and my toe was bleeding when I took my shoes off, but I had such a fun time. It was just my thoughts and me out there and man the cool things that go through your mind. Everyone keep up the great work!!

Oh My.

400 workout with the high school girls.

The other teacher that I've been running with knows the girls and the coaches pretty well and checked if it was OK if we workout with the girls today. I recognized several of the girls from FCA, so that was fun.

We did 6 400s (all were at or under 90seconds) with 45 seconds of rest in between. There was a tough wind on the home stretch, but it was so fun to do a workout with girls and with coaches yelling at us :)

With the 2 laps ran for a warm-up an the jogging in between 400s, I probably ran about 2.5 miles. The girls ran a cool-down, but the other teacher and I just walked two more laps :)

I'm going to be sore tomorrow... but I've got two past teammates coming over, so that means we'll probably run together tomorrow or Saturday. Ouch! (But, I love this pain!!!)

Good idea!

Emily, you are so cute and that's a good way to put it! Thanks for pointing that out!

Runzy

I bought new (and very much needed) running shoes a few weeks ago. They seem to be working out well. Tonight, I really broke 'em in. Puddles, puddles, puddles!

Another 2 miles today. 1.5 miles last Thursday. Probably some more this week!

Snogging.

Hey friends!

Here is what I learned today.  March running is kind of like that "Bear Hunt" song (NOT QUAIL VERSION!).

Sometimes you can't go around it.
Sometimes you can't go over it.
Sometimes you can't go around it.
So you might as well go through it!

Yes, I am talking about the ginormous puddles that block our paths.  Or even better the little snow banks people didn't remove and now are beginning to melt.  So my tip is to just go through it.  It is the quickest geometrical way to get from point A to point B.  Trust me… eventually it gets fun and you feel like you are in the triple jump because your strides keep getting longer to get our quicker.

Once you are done with your run, you may have soggy shoes.  In order for them to dry out quickly try stuffing them with newspapers.  In the long run, I fear your shoes will start to smell.  But that is not a bad smell… it is a runner scent :)  Hahaha

Today was my first longer run outside.  It was gorgeous, but my shoes now have found their way out on our sunporch.  Take advantage of this great weather!!  Bonus: you start getting color :)  I love spring!

Good luck snow jogging aka Snogging!

Monday, March 14, 2011

Richard Simmons.

Today I had a nice surprise from the boss - I get to have my spring break a week late!!  Well actually only 2.5 days.  So what better way to kick off the break with a six miler and 4 miles on the 'wave' machine.  Six miles I didn't run straight.  I had to stop and stretch… I fear I won't be like old times and continue running.  I guess I just need to keep it up and it will come together, eventually?  My goal is to get six miles each day in this week and rest the weekend.  The weather should be nice so I'm gunning for some outside running.

Fun Fact: I do not look like Richard Simmons during a workout - who really is that excited while sweating? Seriously now… that man is odd.

4 miles :)

Just thought I would send a shout out to tell you all that I finally ran 4 miles straight today :) SO excited! I did not want to go to the gym today.. it took all I had to make myself go. Once I was there though, I decided to just go for it! YEAH!

Running with a Co-worker

It is so nice to have someone to run with. The time goes by quickly when you're outside with a friend. A fellow 7th grade teacher and I have been running together for a couple weeks now, but today was the first day we ran together outside. On a treadmill, in a noisy weight room, conversations don't help pass the time. But take that conversation outside, where there is privacy and things to look at (and comment about), and you've got a quick 4 miles!

Since my last post, I have run 4 miles today and 3 miles yesterday.

Even with the wind today, the sunshine felt great and the melting snow was a wonderful sight! Spring is in the air! :)

(Dan - thanks for being willing to run with me :) Pretty soon, I'll have someone to run with on a regular basis! Even on the weekends, haha!)

Can I be an admin so I can track my own miles?

Coffee before running = no good

Since Matt and I are sharing a car right now (long story if you don't know), I didn't go work out until after I took Matt to work. I got to the gym at like 11:15... Well, before going to the gym, I decided to have 2 cups of coffee... Not smart. I was determined to run 4 miles today. I was rocking it, but then after 1.5 miles I had to pee so bad! Darn coffee! But I got right back on and finished the 4 miles! I am not counting it as 4 miles straight so hopefully I will be able to rock that soon! But just a reminder to all of you lovely people- don't drink 2 cups of coffee before a good run :)

Keep up the great work everyone!

PS to Evan- I made you an admin so you can track your own miles... sorry about that!

Really horrible at this...

First of all, my apologies for being a horrible, terrible, no good very bad blogger... I've never been good at it, and always forget to update. I'm making it a goal (especially for lent!) to do a better job of communicating my progress. Good job to you all though! You're all kicking butt.

Em or Alaina, my total miles since March 1 is 22 miles, please update! Thanks!

This week will be interesting; I've got a few longer runs scheduled and, since it's Ag Week at SDSU, I'll be super busy. Hello early mornings!

The weather looks very nice this week and I'm looking forward to finally being able to comfortably run outside!

New record

So, I'm feeling pretty good. I just ran 5.25 miles and 4.5 was a consecutive run. Farthest I've been able to run straight yet and I feel pretty proud of myself actually. I'm not sure I ever thought I would be able to do 4.5 miles much less train for a half-marathon.

I'm anxious to run outside with the weather warming up but how are you guys keeping track of how far you go when you're outside?

Dress warm....

Well sweating out a cold/fever does not work... especially when I decide to run outside in 30* and the wind is blowing head on and I decide only to wear a long sleeve shirt.  I almost broke down and begged a driver to take me home.  After much walking and some tears I made it back to my place after 3.5 miles.

Today I went to the wellness center to get 6 miles in.  I could only do 3.5.  So frustrated that I can't keep running.  Last year I could do twice this without being phased.  I am not sure what my deal is, so I am coming back tonight to get the rest of the run in and some lifting.  Maybe I need to do shorter runs more twice a day until I build up some tolerance.

Evan - We'll talk about cross training... Zumba!? :)

Everyone - Is everyone updated with their miles?  I try to update Evan and Heidi's as I see them...

DOG POOP

I despise people who let there dogs poop on the sidewalks, I wanted to look around while I was running but I had to focus on the path because of doggie do and puddles! 4 miles. Forgive me if I seem overly excited about my little running experiences but it is all new territory for me :)

Everyone is doing awesome and lets keep up the great work!

P.S. Crosstraining sounds important... Emily... Help?

No School Today!

So, I ran on the treadmill at 7:00 this morning and the superintendent came into the weight-room half way through my run. I'll see him running in the mornings before school, so I wasn't surprised when he started lifting. I had about a half mile left when he stopped over to chat a little. He told me I should have ran outside this morning since it was so nice out. I just said that it was too windy! What I didn't tell him is that I am a pansy when it comes to wind and running by myself. Instead, I just ran my 4 miles inside :)

Since my last post, I have ran 3 miles inside on Tuesday, 3 miles outside yesterday (gorgeous out!) and 4 miles inside today. Hoping to do some cross training tomorrow before heading up to Britton for my cousin's baby shower and then run more on Sunday.

PS: it's supposed to be warm this coming week! Yipee!!!

Alaina rocked 3.5!

I ran 3.5 miles straight today :) Oh happy day! That is the longest I have ran straight so far... I am pretty excited about it! Soon I will be running 4 miles :) I got a little uh "shirt burn" on my right arm that doesn't feel so hot though.... My stupid man arms were rubbing too much on my work out shirt I guess. Plus, my right foot was kinda giving me some grief but I stretched it extra good when I was done working out today.

Matt was on the treadmill next to me while I was going. He ran off and on but more than he usually runs so that was great! He hurt his right foot too... He says he feels it pop when he takes a step. We will see where that goes I guess. All in all, he rocked 2.5 today on the treadmill :)

Making up for lost time...

Today I spent 2 hours at the gym! Since I missed four days, I figured I should make up for the lost time. I rocked it at the gym today... I tried to kind of take things easy because I am still a little sick... I ran 2 miles on the treadmill, power-walked 1.25, and then I rocked the elliptical for 2.25 miles! And of course I did my arm and ab routine just for Mel ;)

Mannie- do I have your total right or should it be higher?! I am proud of you for rocking it girl! I'm kinda curious about this wooden treadmill you speak of... I don't know what you are talking about...

Emily- I tried out my fancy new socks today and I really liked them! They are not exactly like yours... I couldn't find ones like yours but the guy recommended the pair I got. I truly think they will help prevent blisters from running but my feet get more hot when I am running in them.

Evan- I liked your point about the calories burned on the treadmill... It is a little depressing sometimes when you feel like you rocked it and then the machine tells you only burned like 300 calories... what?!?!?!?! You are doing great though- keep up the great work! We are glad you joined the team!

Heidi and Dan- WELCOME! We are excited to have you on our team as well!

Ditto

I totally agree with you Evan! Eating right is the hardest part of it for me, always a work in progress. Speaking of eating, I really need to start running in the morning because this whole running-after-eating-supper thing is killing me. Even so, I was able to do 3 miles tonight.

Week one: 11.5 miles, Alaina could you chalk those up for me on the mile tracker? Appreciate it!

3 Is My Lucky Number

Have you ever started running on the treadmill thinking "hey way cool I am burning calories off!!" then 20 minutes later the treadmill tells you that you have only burned off as much calories as the two reseese penut butter cups you ate about 1/2 hour before you started running, and to top it off those delightful morsels only took you 10 seconds to devour. I don't know about you, but that bums me out, because if you know me, I love to eat. This running thing is great but I gotta get myself whipped into eating better, or I feel like I will hit a brick wall?

3 miles today at a slight incline and when I say slight I mean 0.5 degrees :)

3 in Sioux Falls

Im at the Summit League so it has been long three days and not working out.  I did get 3 miles in this morning because we only have the Championships today.  Keep it up everyone!!

Another 1.5

Hey!
Sounds like the weekend was grand for everyone. After logging 4 miles Friday, I hosted a game night on Saturday and decided to do absolutely nothing at all on Sunday. I surely enjoyed that.

Tonight I ran 1.5 miles. I didn't want to go overboard in new shoes, which I seem to also enjoy. It feels SO good to slide my feet into new shoes. Woot woot!

1.8,5.1

1.8 miles on Saturday, 5.1 miles today. Ouch, I kinda feel like I might be pushing myself a little far already because of the intense soreness in my legs, but I have been eating bananas, LIFESAVER!!
Now I am heading to the shop to do lazy car work.

Signing Up...

Thanks for inviting Dan and I! I have to admit that I've been reading this blog since it was created (Emily told me about it right away!), and wondering if Dan and I could make this happen... turns out it works out really well!

Dan has training in Colorado the following week, so we can drive to the Hills and see everyone and then head on to Colorado!

I ran CASA last year - it was my first half marathon... and I LOVED it! The scenery makes for a great distraction as you run along, and it's all for a great cause. I especially enjoyed the fact that it was all downhill. I finished 10 minutes faster than I thought I would.

We're actually doing a 12-week fitness thing here at school (five weeks left!). We're on teams and we keep track of all the fitness activities that we do. Once we reach certain milestones as a team, we get prizes. So far we've only got a $5 gift card to Subway, but our next prize is a $10 card for a local gas station. Since March 1st, I've ran 11 miles.

I did a workout on the treadmill yesterday, just to switch things up... hip is a little sore, so I'm taking today off. I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Fose - thanks for getting me into the habit of doing abs again... having a strong core so essential to your running form (especially when you're tired and at the end of a race), and I've definitely been neglecting them this winter. Em - do you think your hips hurt because they get tight? We learned a "Myrtle" routine last year to help loosen our hips up. I could show it to you sometime if you think it'll help!

Thanks again for letting us join! I'm excited to see everyone :)

Weekend of work

I was not able to get any miles in this weekend since I worked all weekend day shifts... I was going to kill it today but I am feeling super sick today with an awful head cold. Right now I don't think I will be going to run but hopefully I will feel up to it later tonight or at least tomorrow. I just think my head may explode if I try to run...

Forrest, Forrest Gump

So, I got to watch Forrest Gump while running tonight, talk about inspiration! This weekend was busy (Alan and Carrie had their marriage blessing) so I didn't get in as much running as I would have liked, but I was able to log 5 miles tonight and 3.5 as a straight run. I haven't run that far consecutively yet so it felt good. Maybe Forrest had something to do with it!

Welcome to the runners category Evan! Glad you could join us!

Count 'em. 1 - 2 -3 - 4

That's right folks! Four miles! I am pretty pumped up about that. The original goal for this evening's treadmill run was 2 miles. I was feeling too good to stop, so then I set my sights on 3 miles. Then I figured I might as well just shoot for a 1 hour run. Rock on.

Feeling' fabulous!

And...here's an awkward story.
So it's about 9:30 p.m. and I'm alone in the fitness room. There are people hootin' and hollerin' for their ping pong game just down the hall...which, I'll be honest, made me feel kinda lame. But, let's be more honest, I'd rather be running than out after a long week. I've finished my run, cool down and now stretching. Guy #1 awkwardly stares at me as he walks to the bathroom. I continue stretching. I hear a baby giggling and 'talking.' Guy #2 even more awkwardly walks into the fitness room as I'm standing up to start getting ready to go home. He sits down on the bench press, pumps twice making extremely loud noises. Then leaves.

I'm just praying he doesn't come back to say something to me or follow me home. Note to self: don't run after 7 p.m. on weekends. Also, get new contacts. Also, sign up for self defense class.

I AM NO CHEERLEADER!!

I like the idea of running better than cheerleading! I don't think I can move this way??
Chalk me up for 3.25 miles
I hurt. It has been forever since I have ran like that.

Much to my surprise I kind of liked it :)

Just keep swimming..

Tonight I did cross training.  I figured this weekend if I did any type of working out it would be a jog and my legs would than be extremely exhausted from the week's runs.  So I swam.  I swam a long time.  If you have ever lap swam by yourself, you definitely know where I'm coming from.. it is mind-numbing!!

To pass the time I was trying to calculate my distance (32 laps equal 1 mile) in my 60 minute swim.  Sick that I thoroughly enjoyed this brain teaser.  And just because I loved it so much I will tell you method :)

I averaged 40 seconds down each time.  So I rounded up to 45 seconds and got 1.5 laps per minute.  Next I timed 60 x 1.5.  That is 90 laps.  So divide 90/32 which is 2.8.  Take away a little for rest/slowing down and I think I did 2.5 miles?  I told the lifeguard what I was doing because I needed to know the 32 laps thing… she said that was the first time she heard of anyone doing math in the pool.  :)

15 mins freestyle
15 mins kick
15 mins pull
15 mins freestyle

No music, no talking… just yourself thinking.  Yet, I love this workout too because I feel great afterwards!

Hope everyone else is doing fantastic!

Alaina - 2.5 run and Matt- 1.5

Well, this morning was hard! My body was so tired this morning but I made myself and Matt go to the gym. I only ran 2.5 miles before my body had had enough. I ended up putting in 3.25 for the day with power walking included in the mix. Abs and arms were also included in the workout like always but man my arms are so sore from some of the workouts/machines I have been experimenting with...

Matt ran 1 mile straight today without stopping :) Super proud of him! He also worked out so hard today that he ended up getting sick and puking! Nice work Matt! LOL. I am such a mean trainer....

I work the next three day shifts so I won't be able to really hit up the gym... that is what sucks about my schedule. I am still going to try to make myself to abs and arms at home after work before I go to bed. Then I will hit up the treadmill again on Monday hard core!

Em and I decided that we should only include the miles that we walk/run/jog/sprint on the mile tracker... no biking/swimming included. Does that sound okay with everyone?

Peace and Love!

Mel - 1.5

I was le tired today so I just did 1.5 miles. Also noticed I don't run as well when I have someone on the treadmill next to me. That is unfortunate, since it's a rather small room! Maybe I'll get horse blinders :)

In other news...I love Honey Bunches of Oats. I've eaten a whole box in one week. I blame this on Matt & Alaina offering me cereal on President's Day. Haha. It's so darn good for you, though, so it's hard to stop!

Foot Striking

Yesterday was a result of my grumpiness today.  Last night at the gym a girl told me I could lose definitely lose some weight.  The results of her comments made me really upset and put me in a grumpy mood.  Luckily I work with some really great guys and when I told them the story today they were really supportive.  Anyways, that was a hiccup in the road and a wake up call.  Poopy.

Today I ran 5.3 miles.  My hip hurts more when I go at a slower pace so I was doing 8 min miles.  Obviously it makes the miles go by faster which is something I needed today because I was pressed for time.  Secondly I have been trying to change my stride.  For a couple of years I have known Kyle and he has become an awesome runner with great advice.  Here is his website:  http://www.runningonthewhiteline.com/.  The foot strike of mid-sole versus heel striking first is something I have been practicing.  I feel weird, but with time I think this will help me (bonus time passes by faster because I am concentrating on how to run).

Alaina - you already did 13.5 miles in two days?!!?  Also are you putting up our numbers or how would you like to work this….

March 1.

First off, way to go friends!  Mannie - I was just leaving work and was planning on skipping running because I just didn't want to.  But I saw you and knew I would be cheating everyone and myself… so I dragged myself to run.

Secondly - I only did two miles today because my hip is hurting.  I am trying to put heat on it and am popping the pills.  Hopefully the inflammation will go down.  After running I felt like a huge slacker so I biked for an hour… LONGEST HOUR EVER.

Third - Alaina, I noticed that only the person that created the blog has access to the sidebar.  We may have to write it in the blog and at the end of the week total it for you… unless anyone knows a different way.

BYE!

? on the mile tracker

Are we just writing down the miles we run or the total miles we put in on the treadmill?????

Yay for 3 miles!

I officially ran 3 miles today and it felt awesome (when I was done)! Since I ran 3 miles straight tonight, I get to buy some of those fancy socks that Emily has.

It is nice to have Matt there with me to keep telling me to continue going! I need that motivation... I know this sounds silly but I often think of the people on the Biggest Loser while I am at the gym and think if they can do it, I CAN!

To add to the mile tracker on the side- go to design and edit the mile tracker portion... Keep track of your miles to date. I am also writing them down in my calendar.

Keep on trucking everyone! We got this!

Run #2

So, I took yesterday off after running on Sunday and put in 2.5 miles today. How do I track my miles on the right hand side? I'm not sure I see how to do that. Anyway, when I commented that I took time off from work around the 4th of July that was because I thought race day was on the 4th. So, strike that, I took the 25th and 26th off instead so we will be in town for a few days for some rock climbing as well. I ran on the wood treadmill at the Wellness Center tonight, that was pretty cool, I don't know if anyone else has ever tried one of those. Pretty fancy.

Thanks for the encouragement Alaina, appreciate it! Keep up the good work everyone!

Registration Link.

Ever wonder where you registration fee goes for running this race.  Check it out - we are actually helping people!  All proceeds support the Northern Hills Area CASA Program, a local non-profit organization advocating for safe permanent homes for abused and neglected children who are in the court system through no fault of their own.  This definitely is a feel good run :)

Tomorrow is the day when we register and start officially tracking the miles.  Here is the website to do so...
Register for the CASA Half Marathon today at www.NHCasa.EventBrite.com.  OR http://www.nhcasa.com/casa_half_marathon.php
For more information, call the Northern Hills Area CASA office at 605-722-4558 or emailcasaadm@rushmore.com.

Tonight I ran a fairly fast 4 miles and did abs.  I hate abs.  But as Fose said it will make my time go down which is what I want.  Training is going fine.  I realized I need a new playlist because, okay don't get me wrong… I LOVE GOD… but I am struggling getting pumped up while listening to Amazing Grace.  It just isn't working.  Any suggestions on songs?

PS. YOU ALL BETTER BE WRITING YOUR MILES DOWN NEXT TO YOUR NAME ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE.  Thank you :)

Week 1

I'm loving all of your posts! It's fun to hear what you guys are up to and how well training is going for each of you. It's definitely a good tool to hold each of us accountable to commit to our training and follow through to the end. It's inspiring me, anyway!

This is how Week 1 looked for me: kick-off training with a 4.01 mile run Thursday, cycling for 60 minutes on Friday, and finished the week with a 2.98 mile run on Saturday.

I've been using Nike+ since June, and Nike has a great online community where you post runs and can choose training schedules for your level/race. Your iPod records the run, and then you can analyze it online, which I love. I tried linking my training page to this blog so you could see what I'm working on, but it didn't work. I used a Nike+ training plan when I ran the 5k last summer, and the only downside that I'm seeing is that the runs are pretty sporadic in the beginning of the plan. There's a heavy emphasis on cross-training (which is important I think), but according to the plan, I don't have another run schedule until Wednesday. I'm sneaking a short one in today though :)... Nike+ also has workouts with their training plans to supplement the runs; if I can, I'll link those up as well.

Week 2 Training Schedule:

  • Sunday (yesterday), rest
  • Monday (today), 2 mile run, weights
  • Tuesday, cycling for 60 minutes and weights
  • Wednesday, 4.01, post-run back workout (from the Nike+ training plan)
  • Thursday, 30 minute elliptical
  • Friday, 2.98 mile run, post-run myrtle workout (Nike+)
  • Saturday, 4.01 mile run, post-run back workout (Nike+)

Tomorrow is Registration Day

OK, this was never officially decided, but I think tomorrow should be Registration Day for our group of little runners. What do you think? :)

Update: I ran 3 miles yesterday. Progress!

Let the games begin!

Well- Matt is officially signed up at my gym now! Today was our first day together at the gym... it was pretty exciting for me to have a workout buddy! I don't think Matt truly enjoyed having me yelling at him to keep going and to suck it up and go. I was proud of myself for running 2.25 miles today. I realize that it isn't that far but it is an improvement! I'm gonna keep on trucking!

Working 12 hour shifts really sucks when a person is trying to train for a 1/2 marathon.... it really ruins my "schedule" for my workouts... Grrr....

Keep up the great work everyone!

PS- you are going to rock this Mannie!

Here goes

So, this whole thing is new to me. Blogging, running, etc; and how you guys convinced me to do this I'm not sure...probably a moment of weakness on my part. But, I committed and I'm excited to try and do this. Today will be my first day of training (I see I'm a little bit late already), and I've never been a runner so it should be interesting.

P.S. I'm wondering about what the time frame is for you guys around the 4th? I took off the 5th and 6th from work so Carl and I could spend some time climbing in the hills as well. What does everyone else's schedule look like?

P.P.S Thanks for asking me to take part in this experience. I have to say that now because I have a feeling I won't be thinking that while I'm plugging away at 13.1 miles. :)

Treadmill: Take II

OK. I take it back. Treadmills are NOT for the birds.

I ran two miles after work, lifted some weights and did abs...just like old times. I feel like a million bucks! I probably could have run much longer, but I'm having issues with my right foot. It probably means I need to get new running shoes.

I did not, however, figure out how this massive 3-million-ways-to-lift-weights machine could turn into a squat machine. I'm a little bummed. I'm sure I have ruined my quads for the next two days because of all of the other exercises and sit-ups. I feel like I have done a lot, but I know it's just a small amount compared to the looming half-marathon in July.

On another exciting note, I purchased a Microsoft Zune today. Instead of using my sister's old mini disc player, which only has Fiona Apple on it, I can add my own music and listen to the radio. Woot! I do believe that Fiona has done the job for me though. It must be the beat.

Accountable - Em

Hey everyone!

So today I was back on the tread and the hip was still a little stiff but didn't bug me too much.  I did six today and felt great.  I think I could have gone more, but knew that tomorrow would stink then.  Hope everyone else is enjoying this grand experience :)

A couple of things… I actually talked to a serious runner at SDSU today and he said he reads the blog - so not only are we accountable through each other, but others are reading this too!

The other thing is that ate a cookie today… AND LOVED IT.  But during the run it didn't feel so good.  A sign to not indulge in my favorite :( Phooey.

Oh yes, and once you start running it seems you enter this crazy running community where you see the same people over and over.  It is a bond that nothing needs to be said.  You appreciate seeing them because you know they admire you running just like them.  Also, it is really neat talking to them and 99% of the time they have great tips and motivation.  So be 'that talker' and bug your neighbor - they are amazing!

Okay best wishes this weekend and I cannot wait to hear about everyone else's days!

ABS!

My track coaches have etched this concept into my brain: A strong core is extremely important for runners. It is SO true. Doing ab exercises correctly and repetition are the keys to a great core. And, don't forget to take your time. Speediness doesn't get you extra points!

I truly believe that anyone and everyone can handle doing 100 abs per day. It seems like a lot, but it could always be worse (For SDSU, we had to do 500 abs each day). Also, ab exercises are usually pretty simple.

Here's my ab workout (in this order):
1. 20 sit-ups - I'm sure all gym teachers stressed crossing your arms across your chest and keeping feet and knees together while doing sit-ups. Be sure to make it all the way to the top and don't drop back to the floor (the way down works your abs too!)

2. 20 crunches - Start with a regular crunch position, then raise your legs as is they are resting on a chair (but definitely not!) then cross them. Support your neck, but use your abs to pull your head inward, not your arms.

3. 20 twist crunches (10 to each side) - In a regular crunch position, rest your right ankle on your left knee. Complete crunches by pulling your head inward with your right elbow reaching to your right ankle (resting on your left knee). Switch.

4. 20 lift-ups (or..butt-ups haha) - Lay on your back with your legs straight up in the air. Place your arm straight on the ground palm-side down, then reach your toes to the sky (lift your butt off the ground with abs).

5. 20 sit-ups - Same as the first.

This ab workout focuses on both the upper and lower ab sections.

When your abs are stronger, check out some of these links for some more intense ab workouts:

I hope this helps!

Cross training day 2 - Em

Okay, I am not going to bend the truth for this blog.  As much as I hate to admit this - I didn't run today.

After yesterday's run my hip became pretty sore/stiff.  I wasn't sure if I just stepped wrong or pulled a muscle.  Either way, I have had this before and all I can do is rest.  So today I did Kenpo.  It's a form of kick boxing.  It did hurt my hip, but the majority of the work out was punches.  Tomorrow I will see how it is doing otherwise I will water jog for an hour.

Side note: I started a food journal.  I actually was able to say no to cookies today because I didn't want to write it down -- partially because I'm lazy and that is embarrassing to look back on the day.  And after this weekend Fose and Alaina both know my duty secret and passion for convenience store cookies.  Yes, it is embarrassing :)

All or nothing baby!

Day 2 for Alaina

Hey guys! I just wanted to say that I am pretty sore today but I ran another 2 miles today and power walked 1... I also did those lovely abs and arms. I was wondering Em if you know if any stores actually sell those fancy socks you have or do I have to order them from online???

I decided that I am going to treat myself for every mile I run at one time.... Right now I can run 2-2.5 miles without stopping. When I hit 3 miles, I am going to by myself a treat like new running socks or a sports bra... I thought it might be great motivation. I should right down something awesome for each mile I do and let them get better the more miles I do. Just thought I would share some of my inspiration with you guys! LOVE YOU!

Day 1 of training...

2 miles of running + 1 mile of power walking + abs + arms = a very sore Alaina already! LOL!!! Can't wait until tomorrow when I wake up in the AM stiff and sore... Honestly though- it felt great! I am so proud of all of us! Matt is going to join my gym with me. I talked to the gym staff today and learned how much it would cost. Matt and I are going to work out at 7 AM tomorrow! Get this- it was Matt's idea!!!!! We will see what he thinks about it in the morning! Keep up the great work everybody!

Day 1 - Em

Hi friends!  This may sound like a ridiculous post… but I LOVE to blog!

Okay so I officially started to train today.  I have been running off and on since the Fargo Half and have had poor eating habits.  But today I made plunge - all or nothing mentality :).

I am super excited all of you guys have committed too!  I made a couple of goals of my own.  I have always wanted to complete a half in 2 hours or less.  (Fargo was 2 hrs and 4 mins).  Is everyone okay with me doing this? If not, I don't have to!

It was a great day today… my legs felt great and was entertained by Floyd (a big, big man) next to me so I ended up doing 6.  AND I remembered to do abs.  Fose, I'm waiting for that fantastic post :)

Here are something I learned from training last year (remember everyone is different!):

  • I am not expert, but the best advice I have for anyone is to just get time on your feet… doesn't need to be fast, but a longer duration of brisk walking or jogging.  I learned this last year while prepping.  And if you can go 1 hr during a race you can go 2 hrs easily because of the adrenaline.
  • The first month is brutal because you are getting into running shape.  It only takes 1 week to get somewhat out of shape, and 2 weeks to get out of shape.  This totally stinks, yet it totally makes you want to work out because who really wants to start from week one?!  Boo to week one!
  • Also don't forget to cross train.  My body goes into poopy mode and struggles somedays.  I learned to just go with it and I will ride a bike, swim or water jog, or just take the day off… don't force it!
  • Bananas, bananas, bananas, chocolate milk, chocolate milk, and water, water, water, water.  I just gave up soda and dug out my water bottle.  Cookies will be missed… but if I put my body through this why would I ever want to counteract it!?  Ridiculous.
  • I found music sometimes bores me and I have actually switched to motivational podcasts (free from the internet) and audio books.  It is amazing you actually remember what is being said.  Often I found myself wanting to run more because I wanted to know what would be happening next in the book.  Crazy!
That's all for tonight… great job everyone and I can't wait to hear how everyone is doing :)

I'm so proud of all of us!!

Think FORREST.

Treadmills are for the birds

Fun Fact: Treadmills are for the birds.

You'll all laugh at this. I stared at the treadmill for at least 5 minutes before understanding how it works. (It's a treadmill for goodness sake!) Then, since my little fitness center was packed to the brim with people I definitely do not know...I never ran on it. I just walked really fast.

I can't imagine falling on my face in front of that many people that I could definitely see again...a lot.

Gonna hit the gym...

I'm gonna hit the gym today and try not to faint on the treadmill again! I'm scared but I need to start training ;) Did I mention that I am terrified for all of this... Thanks Emily for talking us into it! Bring it on!

Making it happen!

Well, we are going to do this! Matt, Mel, Emily, and I have been coming up with some wonderful ideas! This blog is going to be used as support for everyone during this training. We want everyone to feel open to share their feelings about the process. If you have a sucky run, tell us about it! If you have a great run, tell us about it! We also think it is a great place to share websites or other tips to help everyone out!

First of all- we think it would be awesome to keep track of how many miles we put in. We will start officially keeping track of miles on March 1.

T-shirt idea- after keeping track of everyone's miles we will put on a shirt how many total we all did... Example: 2,360 miles and 13.1 more to go!

We think this is a great way to bond and catch back up on things! We will truly make some memories....

Bonus: we just might make it in the Reporter & Farmer :D Melissa really likes this part of it!
